Mississippi has a rich tradition of fostering artistic creativity and, for years, artists have mixed and matched genres and styles to achieve a sound that is uniquely their own.
None more so than Justin Patterson & the Lost Causes.
Based out of Jackson, smack dab in the middle of the state that has given birth to the blues, country and rock n’ roll, original members Justin Patterson and Ashton Burge have spent the better part of this decade mastering the “gray area” between these genres.
Few people can give a definitive definition to the hybrid sound found on either of the band’s self-financed independent releases, “Debut” (2006) and the more recent “Just Along for the Ride” (2008).
Some would call it twangy rock, others outlaw country.
Some might describe it simply as Americana.
No matter the label, one constant remains for this rock n’ roll band with a cowboy singer: an energetic live show that rivals any touring band on the road today.
Having already shared the stage with a diverse roster of artists, including The Randy Rogers Band, Sammy Kershaw, Blue Mountain, The Captain Legendary Band, Rocket 88, Shelly Fairchild, The Electric Mudd, Highway 101 and many others, Justin Patterson & the Lost Causes are branching out even further in 2009 bringing their music to new fans at music venues, festivals, fairs, and private events across the Southeast.
In describing their music, Patterson notes:
“If we played at a honky tonk, they would say we were too rock n’ roll.”
“If we played our style at a real hardcore rock club, they’d say we were too country.”
As a band, Justin Patterson & the Lost Causes are fine with that, because blurring lines and blending genres is what they do best.

Heavily influenced by a range of artists, from Pink Floyd to Dave Matthews, Wesley's drumming sets my songs apart from the stale mix found on today's country radio. He is an excellent multitasking member of the band, handling his percussion duties while also doubling as the band's official ambassador to the ladies. And he's not afraid to use a cowbell, either.

Ashton has been playing with Justin since 1999 and they've developed quite a productive friendship. His guitar style, influenced heavily by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Stevie Ray Vaughn, has become very conducive to Justin's songwriting style, which hopefully pushes him continuously to be a better player.

Brandon Necaise

The newest member of the band, Brandon has been entrusted with maintaining the bottom end consistency the Lost Causes are quickly becoming associated with. Coming from a hardcore country background, rooted heavily in the sounds of classic and modern country, his style embellishes the Lost Causes' established sound and provides a unique bassline. Now having joined the Lost Causes, Brandon hopes that his career goal of not having to get a real job will become a reality.

Moonlighting as the front man for the South Mississippi based alt. country outfit ‘The Lost Causes’, Justin Patterson pulls triple duty on the mic, acoustic guitar, and harmonica. However, Justin Patterson is first and foremost a serious and dedicated tunesmith, a talent which is apparent with the first listening to his recent release, Debut. These twelve unforgettable songs encompass the sway and swagger of the Bakersfield Sound; the hook, line, and sinker of the Nashville Establishment; the songwriting sensibility of the Texas Troubadour; and the way of the world wisdom of the Wild West Cowboy presented as only a native son reared on Mississippi’s rich musical heritage could.
